People working close to construction vehicles, self-propelled machinery, agricultural machinery and other commercial vehicles can often not be spotted by the machine operators in time and are then hit or even run over by the vehicle.
The result: about 50 fatal accidents in 2011 with earth moving equipment, human suffering and, subsequently, high costs for social funds.
Therefore, as of December 1st, 2008, ISO 5006:2006(E) stipulates that construction vehicles must be tested before use for a save field of view and how accidents caused by a poor field of view can be prevented. For self-propelled machines the StVZO §35b Abs.2/ Richtlinie 11 and for rough-terrain variable reach trucks the DIN EN 15830 is valid.
The field of view from inside the machines can be improved by constructive measures such as an adjusted position of the driver’s cab, a swivel seat, etc. Remaining 'blind spots' can, however, only be reduced by placing further mirrors on the vehicle or by using camera monitor systems.
The field of view of a new construction machine or automobile machine can, in many cases, only be determined very late in the prototype production stage. In order to perform a field of view analysis on the prototype which conforms to the standards, time-consuming test installations in a suitable testing environment are required. The modifications and adjustments on the vehicle, which may be necessary as a result from the analysis, create high follow-up costs.
The solution to the problem can only be a field of view analysis which is performed in the course of the production process. Some manufacturers cannot use the software products available for the simulation of the field of view. Too many functions, not exclusively aimed at field of view analyses, excessive costs for software and training and no compatibility with the CAD system – these are only some arguments that speak against such products.
Therefore, especially small and medium-sized manufacturers cannot benefit from such systems. But also bigger manufacturers are looking for a more efficient solution to the problem.
